The Ball End Extender is an attachment designed to set back the silk (thread winding) portion of ball-end strings.
By installing it on the ball end of a string, it prevents the silk from extending into the speaking length — the part of the string that actually vibrates.
Each Ball End Extender provides approximately 19 mm of setback.
If additional length is needed, multiple extenders can be connected together.
Example: Using cello strings on an acoustic guitar
For example, you might want to install cello strings on an acoustic guitar.
Most cello strings use the same ball-end format as acoustic guitar strings. However, cello strings typically have a longer silk winding near the ball end, which can extend past the saddle and into the vibrating portion of the string.
By using the Ball End Extender, the silk position can be moved back, allowing the string to be installed and used properly.
